Gemini visibility is not an AI Overview screenshot
Gemini measurement in AIB is the official Gemini API with grounding where configured. Google AI Overviews are a Search feature with different provenance. We refuse to label a Gemini API answer as “your AI Overview ranking.”
Gemini brand monitoring · how to appear in Gemini · Google AI Overview tracking
What AIB measures
- Gemini grounded API observations (hybrid knowledge_type)
- Whether grounding/search was actually used on the call
- Citations when the API returns them
- How Gemini’s named competitors differ from OpenAI’s on the same prompt family
How the Bureau works
- Direct Gemini API, not OpenRouter, for core Gemini scores.
- Google-grounded retrieval may also appear under Search Intelligence — tagged separately from Gemini chat.
- Pulse may use Gemini Flash-class grounded calls as a designated cheap probe. That is disclosed in methodology, not hidden.
What this is not
- Not the Gemini consumer app.
- Not Google AI Overviews / AI Mode as a dedicated scored surface in V1.
- Not a Google partnership.
Questions
How does Gemini choose sources?
When grounding is on, Gemini can pull from Search-like retrieval. When it is off, you are closer to model memory. AIB records search_calls rather than assuming every Gemini answer used the web.
Can AIB track Google AI Overviews?
Not as a V1 scored engine. If we add a Search-specific Overview measurement later, it will be a new surface_type — not a relabel of Gemini API logs.
